Emmeline Pankhurst encouraged her Suffragettes to think about deeds rather than words, with the rationale that actions are harder to ignore. I can only write about what I know, and to help me rationalise what I see and experience as a woman living today, I’ve decided to put down some words about how deeds have, and continue, to effect me. I’m hugely privileged in so many ways; I have a wonderful husband and daughter. I live in a nice house in an affluent area of England. I have a great job and wonderful friends and family but I feel confused, saddened and, honestly, pissed off with the world every day. But at the same time I see so much good and like many people, I want to add my voice to a growing movement of people who are pushing for positive change. So, this blog is me laying down my thoughts in an attempt to rationalise them - and maybe help others to find some perspective too? Daniel Boyd wrote ‘Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.’ This is my struggle. Thank you for reading! x
